RECYCLING & MANAGING WASTE.png

Background:

A landfill site (also known as tip, dump or rubbish dump and historically as a midden) is a site for the disposal of waste materials by burial and is the oldest form of waste treatment. Historically, landfills have been the most common methods of organised waste disposal and remain so in many places around the world.

The UK produces more than 434 million tonnes of rubbish every year, but over 60% of this can be recycled.

Recycling is not complicated, simply sort your recyclables into the correct bin, bag or basket. This prevents them from getting sent to landfills with other rubbish, and allows them to get remade into many useful products. Every item recycled makes a difference!

SHOPPING FOR DAILY LIVING.png

This unit is all about everyone's favourite thing... Shopping! Okay, so maybe this isn't about the particularly fun kind of shopping, but spending money on the right things as opposed the frivilous stuff is an important part of independence, eating right and ensuring that you have everything you need.

WASHING, DRYING & STORING LAUNDRY.png

Even the Queen washes her underwear, and so should you! Clothes that have been worn again and again not only eventually smell bad but will also increase the risk of infections.

HOUSEHOLD CLEANING.png

You are going to make and execute a cleaning plan - don't run away!

Take a walk around the house and identify rooms in the house that need to be cleaned and tidied. Make a list that includes all of the following:

  • The equipment needed to clean that room.

  • The products needed to clean that room.

  • What safety precautions will you need to make when using these items and cleaning your room?

Once all this is established, it's time to put it all to practice! Feel free to take tips from Kim and Aggy in this edition of How Clean is Your House.

FOOD HYGIENE & SAFETY.png

Cooking is crucial in order to maintain a healthy and balanced diet - but it doesn't matter what you cook if treat your ingredients incorrectly. Some items, if not refrigerated, will go off quickly; some items of food you simply cannot reheat and did you know that if you store bananas in the fridge, they'll go bad a lot quicker than if they are left in a fruit bowl?.
